Why has Paxil become the new drug that doctors prescribe to patients wanting to quit smoking? Doctors started prescribing it to smokers who have a tendency to become mildly depressed when trying to quit smoking. When you are trying to quit and Paxil is prescribed, you should avoid any withdrawal depression that can result from the body’s need for the nicotine. Paxil can help take the blues away that one experiences because they are fighting the urge to have a cigarette. The Issues Some people have experienced the need to smoke when mixing quit aids and Paxil. There are only a handful of smokers that experience this problem, but it does make your goal of quitting your habit harder. Although this is hard to believe, it does happen to a small amount of people. Some people even refuse to use the drug because of the side effects and what can happen if they keep smoking. It is true, that with many drugs, you should not smoke or drink alcohol or caffeine, but the side effects are mild in most cases. When you need help to quit smoking, Paxil can help. It will relieve the symptoms of depression, aggravation, frustration and stress. These are all

Craving Smokes 3 Months After Quitting
<p><strong>Why am I Craving a Cigarette Three Months into Quitting?</strong><a href="http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/healingthemind/f/threemonths.htm"><img src="http://z.about.com/d/quitsmoking/1/0/F/A/stressedwoman.jpg" border="0" alt="" hspace="5" width="170" height="113" align="right" /></a></p> <p><strong>An About.com Smoking Cessation reader asks:</strong></p> <p><em>"I quit smoking cold turkey almost three months ago. I've had my ups and downs in that time, but feel like I've been making progress overall. However, in the last week or so, I've been thinking about smoking so much and it's getting worse. I know the nicotine is long gone from my body, but I swear I'm having cravings for a cigarette that feel just like nicotine withdrawal. Why is this happening to me, and will I always feel this way?"</em></p> <p>The three month mark is a notoriously bad time for quitters. The rush, or excitement of quitting has worn off, but we haven't yet completed the healing process from nicotine addiction. We're still thinking about smoking, and most of us are still feeling the urge to smoke now and then. It can leave a person feeling edgy and sad. We wonder if we'll always be doomed to feel this way.</p> <p><strong>More Reading:</strong></p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/afteryouquitsmoking/qt/icky_threes.htm">The Icky Threes</a></li> </ul> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/forumgems/a/3monthsfree.htm">Three Months Along</a> -- Kay's Story</li> </ul> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/benefitsofquitting/a/3monthbenefits.htm">The First Three Smoke-Free Months</a> -- A Personal Account</li> </ul><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/25/craving-smokes-3-months-after-quitting.htm">Craving Smokes 3 Months After Quitting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/">About.com Smoking Cessation</a> on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 11:23:00.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/25/craving-smokes-3-months-after-quitting.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/25/craving-smokes-3-months-after-quitting.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://quitsmoking.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/25/craving-smokes-3-months-after-quitting.htm&#038;zItl=Craving Smokes 3 Months After Quitting">Email this</a></p>
China's Tobacco Epidemic
<p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/quitsmoking/1/0/a/9/graveyard.jpg" border="0" alt="" hspace="5" width="170" height="128" align="right" />In 2008, China was home to 300 million adult smokers who consumed approximately 1.7 trillion cigarettes a year, or 3 million cigarettes a minute.</p> <p>In a report just released this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the current statistics tell us that the tobacco epidemic plaguing China isn't improving.</p> <p>Today there are approximately 301 million adult smokers, and only 16 percent of them are thinking about quitting within the next year.</p> <p>Here in the United States we have the benefit of  anti-smoking campaigns and legislation that are  aggressively geared toward teaching us about the health hazards of smoking and how to quit using tobacco.  In China however, the message doesn't seem to be sinking in. A few pertinent statistics:</p> <ul> <li>46.4% of adults noticed anti-cigarette smoking information on the television or radio.</li> </ul> <ul> <li>63.6% of current smokers who noticed a warning label on cigarette packs did not think about quitting smoking.</li> </ul> <ul> <li>23.2% of adults believe smoking causes stroke, heart attack, and lung cancer.</li> </ul> <ul> </ul> <ul> </ul> <ul> <li>24.6% of Chinese adults believe exposure to tobacco smoke causes heart disease and lung cancer in adults and lung illnesses in children.</li> </ul> <p>Read the CDC Report:  <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/global/gats/countries/wpr/fact_sheets/china/index.htm">Smoking and Tobacco Use: 2010 China Fact Sheets</a></p> <p><em>Image © Stockpert</em></p> <p><strong>Related:</strong></p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/antismokingresources/a/tobaccoepidemic.htm">The Global Tobacco Epidemic</a></li> </ul> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/tobaccostatistics/a/tobaccofacts.htm">Shocking Tobacco Facts</a></li> </ul><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/22/chinas-tobacco-epidemic.htm">China's Tobacco Epidemic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/">About.com Smoking Cessation</a> on Sunday, August 22nd, 2010 at 11:48:55.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/22/chinas-tobacco-epidemic.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/22/chinas-tobacco-epidemic.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://quitsmoking.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/22/chinas-tobacco-epidemic.htm&#038;zItl=China's Tobacco Epidemic">Email this</a></p>
Throat Cancer for Michael Douglas?
<p><a href="http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/oralcancer/a/oralcancer.htm"><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/quitsmoking/1/0/c/G/MichaelDouglas.jpg" border="0" alt="" hspace="5" width="160" height="214" align="right" /></a>It was announced on Monday that 65 year old screen star Michael Douglas has a tumor in his throat.   He will undergo 8 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation treatments in an effort to remove the growth.</p> <p>While it is not known whether the tumor is benign or cancerous, reports indicate that Mr. Douglas is hopeful and doctors optimistic that he will fully recover from his illness. Years of drinking and smoking are being pointed to as the probable culprit.</p> <p><strong>Smoking and Oral Cancer:</strong></p> <p>Approximately 90 percent of people diagnosed with oral cancer or pharyngeal cancer (including cancer of the mouth, tongue, lips, throat, parts for the nose, and larynx) are tobacco users.</p> <p><strong>Drinking and Oral Cancer:</strong></p> <p>Heavy, regular alcohol consumption is a risk factor for oral cancer. It's estimated that 75 to 80 percent of those with oral cancer drink alcohol frequently. Like smokers, people who drink a lot of alcohol on a regular basis are also six times more likely to get an oral cancer than nondrinkers.</p> <p><strong>Tobacco and Alcohol Combined:</strong></p> <p>The risk for oral cancer that each substance represents is compounded when they are used together.</p> <p>Additionally, males are more at risk for developing oral cancer, especially men over 60 years of age.</p> <p>Michael Douglas and his wife, Catherine Zeta Jones have two children, Dylan Michael and Carys Zeta.  My heartfelt thoughts go out to their family during this difficult time.</p> <p><em>Photo: Michael Douglas and wife, Catherine Zeta Jones<br /> Frazer Harrison / Getty Images</em></p> <p><strong>Related:</strong></p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/oralcancer/a/oralcancer.htm">Oral Cancer Overview</a></li> </ul> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/oralcancer/a/marlenestory.htm">Diagnosed with Oral Cancer</a> -- Marlene's Story</li> </ul> <p><strong>If you're a smoker...</strong></p> <p>Don't offer another day of your precious - and irreplaceable -- life to an addiction that will kill you, given the chance.  Use the  information and support here at About.com Smoking Cessation to help you put tobacco in your past -- <em>permanently.</em></p> <p><strong>Quit Smoking Help</strong></p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/preparetoquit/a/quitsmkingtools.htm">Your Quit Smoking Toolbox</a></li> </ul> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/healingthemind/f/therightmindset.htm">Fostering the Mindset for Success</a></li> </ul> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&#38;webtag=ab-quitsmoking">Smoking Cessation Support Community</a></li> </ul><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/19/throat-cancer-for-michael-douglas.htm">Throat Cancer for Michael Douglas?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/">About.com Smoking Cessation</a> on Thursday, August 19th, 2010 at 13:06:34.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/19/throat-cancer-for-michael-douglas.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/19/throat-cancer-for-michael-douglas.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://quitsmoking.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://quitsmoking.about.com/b/2010/08/19/throat-cancer-for-michael-douglas.htm&#038;zItl=Throat Cancer for Michael Douglas?">Email this</a></p>

And that, of course, is what we all want -- lasting freedom from nicotine addiction.</p> <p>If I had to pick 5 essential ingredients for long-term success with smoking cessation, they would be:</p> <p><strong>If you want to change your life, change your mind.</strong></p> <p>You can abstain from smoking for years, but if you never change the relationship you have with cigarettes, the chains will continue to hold you tight. <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/howtoquitsmoking/a/quit_smoking.htm">Change the way you think</a> and you can free yourself in an instant. You'll still have to do the work to undo the years of habit of course, but once you free your mind, you are on your way.</p> <p><strong>Yard by yard is always hard, but inch by inch is a cinch.</strong></p> <p>This is a catchy way to remember another valuable truth that will help you on your journey. Recovery from <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/nicotine/a/nicotineeffects.htm">nicotine addiction</a> is a process of gradual release over time. Keep yourself in the present moments of today and you'll find the job manageable. Don't worry about tomorrow or the next day or forever. Think about today only and what you can do with it. Recovery comes in inches, but those inches add up.</p> <p><strong>Think of momentum as a tool.</strong></p> <p>We all start our quit programs on day one. We all have to endure <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/glossaryofterms/g/hellweek.htm">hell and heck weeks</a> and the discomforts beyond them. Every smoke-free day makes you stronger and more able to succeed. The gains are imperceptible at first, but they're happening all the same. Day by day you're building momentum and it will propel you forward with greater ease as time goes by. And that momentum will carry over into other areas of your life as well. You'll use it to achieve other goals you once thought of as unattainable. We can always do more than we think we can.</p> <p><strong>Time heals.</strong></p> <p>When I first quit smoking and found the About.com <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&#38;webtag=ab-quitsmoking">Smoking Cessation forum</a>, an old-timer told me that <em>in time, smoking would lose its importance in my life.</em> I hung on those words - they gave me hope. I had a hard time believing it from where I was as a new quitter, but I wanted what he said to be true so badly.</p> <p>Well, that old-timer was right. Today, smoking has lost its luster completely. Along with a change in attitude, time has helped me to replace the hundreds of associations I had to smoking. The triggers are gone - and new, healthier habits have taken their place. It's a very rare occasion when a thought of smoking flits across my mind anymore. Time has been a great quit buddy.</p> <p><strong>Smoking cessation is not a race.</strong></p> <p>Relax<em> into </em>your quit. Don't think of it as a destination but as a journey. Take your time and let the healing happen as it will. It's a mistake to place expectations on your recovery, and it's a sure-fire way to set yourself up for failure. Let the process unfold for you as an individual. Take the experiences of others into account, but don't let them drive your quit program. Your quit program is yours alone.</p> <p><em>You can quit smoking successfully.</em> Think of smoking cessation as a journey - a grand adventure that will bring you treasures and rewards beyond your wildest dreams. Yes, there will be times of turmoil, but they are temporary. You are building a new and improved you. Be patient and give yourself time to grow into it.</p> <p><em>Photo © Stockxpert</em></p> <p>************</p> <p><strong><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&#38;webtag=ab-quitsmoking&#38;tid=90571">Take The Quit Smoking Monday Pledge</a></strong></p> <p><a href="http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/chooseyourquitdate/a/healthymonday.htm"><img src="http://z.about.com/d/quitsmoking/1/0/b/B/healthymonday.gif" border="0" alt="" hspace="5" width="160" height="97" align="right" /></a></p> <p><strong><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/chooseyourquitdate/a/healthymonday.htm">Healthy Monday</a></strong> encourages us to think of <em>every </em>Monday as a day that we can begin work anew on goals that we have for ourselves.
